Rebels rally past Jackets in AAAAA quarterfinal

GUYTON — Effingham County’s girls basketball team has lived on the edge this season, close games being second nature to the Rebels.

But, none were any more nail biting than Wednesday night’s 59-53 win against Thomas County Central.

It wasn’t that the game was close, but what was at stake: a berth in the Class AAAAA playoffs Final Four.

The Rebels are now on their way to Kennesaw State University for a 4 p.m. matchup with perennial state power Miller Grove on Saturday. Central, meanwhile, ended its season one game away from a semifinal round it hasn’t reached since 1988.

“We knew it would be a close game, that they were a team that scraped and hustled,” Rebel coach Curtis Stevens said. “They did a phenomenal job on the boards.”

The Yellow Jackets did indeed pound the Rebels on the boards, but Effingham County had something on its side the visitors didn’t have —Kyesha Lewis and a standing room only crowd that never sat down and got quiet until the clock showed 0:00.

Lewis turned in arguably her best performance of the season as she scored a game-high 23 points, getting 21 in the second half including 13 in the fourth quarter when the Rebels overcame a four-point deficit.
