THOMASVILLE —
This may be Greg Wimberly’s only season, but he’s quickly becoming a leader for the Thomasville Bulldogs.
During the Bulldogs’ last four games, including two in the Region 1-AA tournament, the senior has averaged 18 points. Against Early County in a region semifinal, Wimberly tallied 26 in a five-point win. He has played a major role in the Bulldogs’ run to the state playoffs, which begin on Saturday at home against Toombs County.
“That’s the kind of kid he is,” Thomasville coach Ben Tillman said. “He’s so laid back. He’s kind of like his cousin (Fred Holton). Fred Holton was that kind of kid. He was so laid back, but in big games he always stepped up and played well.
“You might not see him when he plays against Berrien. He might not have any points when he plays against Fitzgerald. But when you play the Early Countys and the Cooks, the Albanys and the Westovers, he always puts stats on the board. That’s what you really want, kids that are able to step in and play during big games. He’s that kind of kid.”
Wimberly was needed against the Bobcats. Star center Willie Clayton was in foul trouble the whole game before fouling out with 5:02 left. Thomasville looked to Wimberly, who carried the Bulldogs with 18 points in the first half.
Wimberly’s emergence was vital since star post player Robert Carter transferred to Shiloh High School before the season.
