MILLEDGEVILLE — Cairo is in the quarterfinals for a third straight year. Winning their sixth straight, the Syrupmakers knocked off Baldwin Friday night 9-7 to advance to the round of eight in the Class AAA playoffs. Cairo will travel to Gainesville next Friday night to play the Red Elephants.
Cairo scored tallied a scoring pass in the first half and a safety on a blocked punt in the second half.
Quarterback Brian Walker hooked up with Arthur Robinson for a 12-yard touchdown strike to give Cairo its first points. Walker was effective through the air, throwing for 119 yards on 7-of-14 completions.
Running back Laquinton Williams was once again strong on the ground, churning out 115 yards on 23 attempts. It was the third straight 100-yard rushing performance for the junior tailback.
Cairo finished with 268 total yards. The Syrupmakers committed one turnover and were penalized 14 times for 80 yards. Baldwin’s only score came with 6:25 remaining in the fourth quarter. Quarterback DeAndre Thomas scored from four yards out.
Next week will be the first meeting between Cairo and Gainesville.
