Yellow Jackets still confident following sluggish win

THOMASVILLE — Bill Shaver was surprised with the encounter he had with his players Friday night after Thomas County Central’s 15-8 playoff win.

“They were in the locker room and had a lot of frowns on their faces. I asked them, ‘Who had the most points on the scoreboard up there?’” Shaver reminded them. “They were disappointed.”

The Yellow Jackets committed four turnovers en route to one of their lowest scoring outputs of the year. But as Shaver points out, his Yellow Jackets still won the game. A lack of confidence will not be an issue next week.

“It’s good that you don’t play your best and you found a way to win,” Shaver said. “The offense made a couple of plays when they needed to. The defense got a big interception there in the end when we needed to. It’s always good to keep moving on.

“It’s good to maybe show (the team) that if you don’t play your ‘A’ game all the time when you get into the playoffs, the games are going to be closer. You’re going to lose games. Hopefully, that’ll give them motivation to go out and play their best.”

Despite managing just two touchdowns, Central did tally 371 yards. If not for three fumbles and one interception, the final score could have been a lot worse.

“The turnovers kind of put a negative twist on (the statistics). We really could have put the game away there in the fourth quarter if we had taken advantage of the two drives we had inside their territory,” Shaver said. “You can learn from that knowing that in the playoffs you’re playing good teams and you’ve got to try to finish.”

INJURY TOLL: Central continues to be a battered and bruised football team. The team’s leaders on offense and defense felt the brunt of the punishment Friday night.

“Eric (Dodson) got his shoulder hit again a little bit, but he went back in the game. He’ll be sore,” Shaver said. “Caleb (Heard) actually got clipped in the back on a kickoff return. His lower back is a little bit sore. Ray (Drew) kind of tweaked his ankle a little bit again.”

One positive was the return of running back Curtis Brooks. A thigh bruise kept the starter out of Central’s final regular season game at Bainbridge. Brooks finished Friday night with 66 yards rushing and experienced no lingering problems with the thigh injury.
