COVINGTON — Brookwood's season of struggles came to an end Friday night.
In the first round of the GISA Class AAA playoffs, the Warriors were routed by Pinecrest Academy 38-6. The loss dropped Brookwood's record to 2-9.
"They played a great ball game," Brookwood coach Robert East said. "They came out in the first half and just got off the ball. They beat us at the line of scrimmage.
"To our kids' credit, we never stopped fighting."
Pinecrest had a huge size advantage and utilized it, running to a 35-0 halftime lead.
"They didn't get outside the tackles very much and they didn't throw the ball very much. They just came right at us, which is what they should have done," East added.
Brookwood's only score came in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard sneak by quarterback Taylor Bragg.
The loss was the fourth straight for Brookwood to end a tough rookie campaign for Brookwood's first-year coach.
“You hate it for the seniors that got caught in a transition year because they deserved the opportunity to fight, but it gives us a lot to be excited about," East said. "We were using lots of young players. We're moving forward with them, so the future of Brookwood football is very bright. We've just got to get in the weight room and move forward."
The key to Brookwood's future in football may rest in the hands of the GISA. As one of the smaller schools in Class AAA, Brookwood has been outmanned in many of its games in Region 3 the last two years. Reclassification will happen soon. Whether the Warriors remain in Class AAA remains to be seen.
"We can't control our classification. At this time, we don't have any idea what's going to happen," East said. "What we can control is how we work in the weight room, how we work on being competitors and how we work on coming together as a team."
