The conclusion of the regular season is finally here.
All four area teams have a chance to make statements tonight in key matchups.
It doesn’t get bigger for the Thomasville Bulldogs as they travel north to play Region 1-AA rival Fitzgerald for the region championship. Both have been on cruise control in region play. The key to the game: Thomasville’s ability to slow down Fitzgerald’s wing-T offense. The Purple Hurricanes are as explosive as ever, scoring at least 21 points in every game. Of Fitzgerald’s nine wins this year, on seven occasions, the Purple Hurricanes reached the 48-point plateau.
They should come back down to earth tonight, however. Thomasville is fast, quick and aggressive and should slow down Fitzgerald’s rushing attack.
Having a healthy Charles Hayes at quarterback and defensive back is also a key for the Bulldogs who are primed for a playoff run.
It begins tonight.
Thomasville 24, Fitzgerald 20
Thomas County Central at Bainbridge
Central meets its former coach for the second straight year. This time, however, the finish won’t be close. Ed Pilcher’s Bearcats have been inconsistent this year and are on the brink of not making the playoffs. His former team is clicking on all cylinders. The Region 1-AAAA champion Yellow Jackets have been stingy on defense and are progressing on offense.
The only way Central could be in trouble is if it hasn’t come down from its emotional victory against Westside-Macon. Playing against Pilcher will be motivation enough for the Yellow Jackets.
Central 27, Bainbridge 10
Westover at Cairo
Cairo has already secured a No. 2 seed and home playoff game for the upcoming Class AAA playoffs. Still, the Syrupmakers have yet to play a complete game. It starts tonight against Westover, a team Cairo has had great success against in recent years.
The defending champs play like it tonight.
Cairo 42, Westover 10
Brookwood at Pinecrest
The GISA Class AAA playoffs begin tonight and Brookwood looks for a huge upset on the road. Unfortunately, it’s playing a Pinecrest team that’s won nine straight. Make it ten in a row after tonight.
Pinecrest 34, Brookwood 10
