Cairo keeping focus, not looking toward playoffs

CAIRO — Cairo’s focus is the same as it was in week 1 — one game at a time, one day at a time.

That next game comes tonight when Region 1-AAA rival Westover comes to West Thomas Stadium for the regular season finale.

“We’ve got Westover. We haven’t even looked at the scenarios really to know who we’re playing,” said Cairo coach Tom Fallaw, whose team secured a No. 2 seed and home playoff game for next week’s playoffs.

“I’m sure (tonight) after the game, I’ll do what I always do. I’ll get on the phone and find out who we’re playing.

“Even last year when we’ve got teams calling us second game in the year wondering who they’re going to play in the playoffs, we’re always just (looking at) the next week. We haven’t looked down the road at all.”

Cairo will host the No. 3 seed out of Region 4, likely to be Woodward Academy, Spalding or Mary Persons.

FAMILIAR FOE: Tonight’s homecoming opponent is a familiar one for the Syrupmakers and one Cairo has had great success against. In 18 meetings, Cairo has tallied 15 victories, including nine straight dating back to 1994. This year, the Patriots have struggled to a 3-6 overalrecord, including five straight losses. Despite being outscored 140-30 during the skid, it hasn’t been because of lack of effort, according to Fallaw.

“I see a team that’s a young team and one that everybody’s trying to say has given up,” Fallaw said. “They haven’t given up. They’ve got some talent.

“They’ve got the players. Coach (Jeff) Caldwell, out of the talent that he has, I think coach Caldwell does better than anybody scheming you up and doing things that can hurt you. He’ll have them coached up and ready to play us.

“We know anytime that somebody plays us, we’re going to get their best effort,” Fallaw added.

“We’re anticipating Westover coming down here and ready to play.”
