THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central is one win away from a Region 1-AAAA soccer championship.
In a region semifinal Friday at Thomas County Stadium, the Yellow Jackets used two goals from Montavious Diaz to sneak past Hardaway 2-1.
“Give credit to our guys. They fought hard today,” Central (7-4) coach Jonathan Carroll said. “The result today is a testament to their commitment all of spring break. The guys just worked their socks off.”
Central will play in the title game on Tuesday at either Upson-Lee or at home against Harris County.
Central’s game-winning goal came in the second half. With the score tied, Josh Choice delivered a kickoff that traveled three-quarters of thefield. Diaz caught possession and knocked it in past the Hardaway keeper.
“Josh is a great sweeper. He’s come in and done a great job,” Carroll said. “Montavious read it really well and finished perfectly.”
Diaz’s first goal came in the first half. Off a great pass from brother Marcus Diaz, Montavious caught the Hardaway defense off guard and snuck in the game’s first point.
“It was good to go one-up on these guys,” Carroll said. “I think (Hardaway) was ball watching and Montavious was back post. He just took advantage.”
