THOMASVILLE — Charlton County, Appling County and McIntosh County Academy were a combined 27-3 during the regular season.
All are sitting at home after one week of postseason play, however.
Region 2-AA’s best teams were manhandled by Region 1 in the first round of the playoffs, solidifying Thomasville’s league as one of the best in the state.
“It makes you feel good about your region because it lets you know that Fitzgerald, Cook and Brooks were a little better than we thought everybody was,” said Thomasville coach Richie Marsh, whose team defeated McIntosh 20-7.
Cook destroyed Region 2’s top seed Appling County 26-10 and Fitzgerald overpowered Charlton County 39-7.
“The last time Fitzgerald and Charlton were in the district together, Fitzgerald won that region and Charlton won the state championship,” Marsh said. “I think the Fitzgerald-Charlton score was a little ‘wow’ factor.
“But saying that, we know Region 3 is special.”
Brooks County will host Region 3’s No. 2 seed Jefferson County, Cook will travel to Toombs County and Thomasville will travel to Region 3 champ Dublin.
“I know that we’re going up against another tough region,” Marsh added. “In saying that, it follows right along with the way the season went.”
With all four Region 1 teams advancing, it also gives the Bulldogs confidence in knowing they competed in one of the top regions statewide.
Thomasville knocked off Cook and Fitzgerald and lost to Brooks County 14-6.
“I think it helps give you confidence,” Marsh added. “That’s one thing I don’t think we’ll have to fight this year is pride. Some teams have to fight pride.
“I think we understand we’ve got to play together as a team to be good and that we did play a season of great atmosphere and some great teams.”
