Warriors use late heroics in win

By Chrighton Allen

THOMASVILLE — The Brookwood Warriors continued their winning ways, netting a third consecutive victory Saturday afternoon with a 7-5 win against Deerfield-Windsor.

Coach Tommy McMillan was extremely pleased by his team’s streak, “I am proud to be a part of this team of young men who love baseball and are learning everyday to be more and more of a team. When you have a group of guys who all support each other and a coaching staff who believes in each player like we do here, it’s special.”

The Warriors, acting on their coach’s team mantra, needed contributions by many players in order to down the GISA Class AAA Knights. On the mound, Kyle Brown earned the win for Brookwood, pitching five solid innings, scattering eight hits and collecting two strikeouts. Sophomore Terry James Chastain centered in the sixth inning and suffocated the Knights for two strong innings, earning the save.

“I knew I had a good defense behind me,” Chastain said. “My arm felt good and I went out and threw strikes.”

Brookwood needed late game heroics by a host of players in the fifth inning to pull out the win with what is emerging to be their trademark dramatic flair. Down 5-4, Jeb Johnson doubled in Caleb Bryson to knot the score at 5-5. The next batter, Lee Hopkins, smashed a deep double into the left center gap to plate pinch-runner Chase Harvard. Hopkins advanced to third base on an error. Cory Reagin then chopped a pitch to short, but it was enough to earn him an RBI as Sean Bell, running for Hopkins, crossed home, making the score 7-5 in favor of the Warriors.

Ethan Howell also had a big afternoon at the plate. Taking advantage of his first start of the season, the sophomore finished 2-of-3, with a run scored.
