THOMASVILLE — A 3-0 deficit was too big of a hole for the Thomasville Bulldogs to dig out of Tuesday night.

Hosting Region 1-AA rival Brooks County, Thomasville allowed three first-inning runs and lost 5-2.

“They’re solid, very good team,” Thomasville coach Erik McDougald said. “They swing the bat well, play good defense, do a lot of things right. They’ve got what a lot of folks don’t have, three solid pitchers, three very solid pitchers. It’s going to be a tough team to beat. That’s why they’re 7-0.”

Brooks scored four of its five runs off Thomasville starter Tanner Warren. In the first inning, Brandon Dowling drove home Aaron Shipman with a solid single. He was followed by a double from Brandon McMillian. David DeSantiago added a two-run single to cap the scoring.

After the first inning, Warren allowed just one run through the next five innings.

“He settled down very well,” McDougald said. “He did a real good job through the middle innings, a couple of jams he was able to work his way out of. After those first two innings, he was able to be effective with not his best stuff tonight.”

Dowling later connected for a long home run off Jake Fletcher in the seventh inning. Thomasville scored its only two runs in the second inning off four hits. Brooks Woodward, Brian Miller and Thomas Cone tallied singles to load the bases. Preston Nix drove home a run with a groundout. He was followed by an RBI single from Matt Allen. Allen also doubled in the seventh inning. The Bulldogs finished with six hits.

“We had some opportunities, created some opportunities for ourselves with some small ball,” McDougald said. “All said and told, a couple of things just didn’t go our way.

“By and large, they did a good job keeping us off base.”
