One of the oldest adages in football is that the defense is always ahead of the offense to begin a season.
A case in point is the first half of Friday’s preseason scrimmage between the Tift County Blue Devils and Cairo High Syrupmakers at Brodie Field.
The teams were to play three quarters of varsity action, and one quarter of a con- trolled scrimmage for the junior varsity and freshmen. The first two quarters ended with Cairo holding an unlikely 3-2 advantage. The third quarter was not over at press time.
During those first two quarters, the Blue Devils had 77 total yards, while Cairo accounted for 65. However, one pass play accounted for 40 of the Tift yards, while two pass plays gave the Syrupmakers 39 yards.
The rest of the halfsaw both teams with big hits on defense and bobbles on offense as neither team could mount much offense.
