It wasn’t easy, but the Thomasville girls basketball team has advanced to the third round of the Class AA playoffs for the first time in three years.
The Bulldogs overcame a halftime deficit to defeat visiting Westside-Augusta 47-41 on Tuesday. Thomasville now will host the Bleckley-Dublin winner at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
“It was a tough win and every round is going to get harder and harder in the playoffs,” THS coach Thomas McAboy said.
The Bulldogs got that win thanks to some clutch shooting late at the free throw line. After Westside closed within 33-31 on a Tyesha Ravenell three-point play to open the fourth quarter, Thomasville (25-2) went to work from the charity stripe. Other than a Ja Dunbar basket early in the period, all of Thomasville’s 14 fourth-quarter points came at the line. That included the final 10 — nine coming in the final minute as the Patriots were forced to foul.
“We were able to knock down some of our free throws down the stretch, and just were able to finish the game,” McAboy said.
Trailing 20-19 at halftime, Thomasville had the chance to put the game away at the free throw line thanks to a big third quarter. Bree Brown, who led the Bulldogs with 23, scored six in the quarter to spark THS. Dunbar added a 3-pointer during the crucial quarter as she finished with 12.
“That was a big quarter for us, allowed us to get a little separation,” McAboy added.
Westside was led by Jahmia Bradley’s 10, six in the fourth and four in the second quarter.
