THOMASVILLE —
Two teams entered Friday night tied for the Region 1-AA lead.
One is still perched atop the region standings with one week left in the regular season.
In a much-anticipated rematch between the Albany Indians and Thomasville Bulldogs, the Indians exacted revenge for their only region loss with a 56-48 victory over the Bulldogs at Thomasville. The win improved Albany's region record to 9-1, while Thomasville dropped to 8-2.
"I think the biggest difference was, they made their free throws and we didn't make ours in the last three to four minute mark. If we make our free throws, we'll push the game out a little farther," said Thomasville coach Ben Tillman, whose team beat Albany 37-36 earlier this year. "That's part that we've got to control. Also, we've got to control the second-chance shots. I think they got a couple more second-chance shots than we got in the second half."
After leading 19-18 at halftime, the Indians scored 37 second-half points to pull away from the Bulldogs.
"I think both teams were really going at it defensively and both teams were making big shots," Tillman added. "I just think it came down to the last three or four minutes of the game, they were able to make their free throws which pushed them over the hump."
Trey Gosier paced the Bulldogs with 15 points. Greg Wimberly chipped in 14, but star center Willie Clayton finished with just 11 points on senior night.
Tim Pierce finished with a game-high 27 points to lead the Indians.
Thomasville has three more region games left before the start of region tournament in two weeks. Tillman is hopeful his team can benefit from close games come the postseason.
"You always want to play good competition throughout your region. It prepares you, not only for your region tournament, but it prepares you for state tournament," Tillman said.
