THOMASVILLE — Brookwood scored an important win for its athletic program on Tuesday.
The Georgia Independent Schools Association released its new classifications for the 2010-12 seasons and Brookwood was reclassified in Class AA. For the past two season, Brookwood’s sports teams were playing in Class AAA despite having one of the smallest schools in that classification. Brookwood will rejoin Class AA this fall.
“It is good news that we will be classed with schools that are our size,” Brookwood athletic director Robert East said. “It’s an encouraging word to our students, but it doesn’t change the task at hand. Our job is to be the best we can no matter who shows up to play us.”
Brookwood’s teams have had significantly less success competing in Class AAA, especially in football. In the past two seasons, the Warriors won just one region game and no playoffs game. That came on the heels of a state title in Class AA in 2007. East said his school will be the seventh largest in Class AA.
“We’re going to be playing with schools slightly larger and slightly below us, which I believe is what classification is designed to do,” East said. “It gives you an opportunity to play with teams that are dressing the same number of kids that you dress in all your sports, drawing from the same size population.”
The new regions will not be released until Monday, though there will be a week for schools to appeal if necessary.
“It will be late February before everything is completely settled down,” East said.
East added that a scheduling meeting for football is set for later this month.
