THOMASVILLE —
It's been a tale of two seasons for the Thomasville Lady Bulldogs.
Two months into the campaign, the defending Region 1-AA champs were winless and 0-3 in region play.
Over the last month, however, the Lady Bulldogs are 10-4 and finished second in last week's region tournament.
How Thomasville's storybook season ends in the state playoffs remains to be seen. The first glimpse into the Lady Bulldogs' future starts on Friday in the first round.
"It's been remarkable," said Thomasville coach Thomas McAboy about his team's season. "We just started out as a work in progress. We just kind of came together at the end. Just to have a chance to play for a third straight region title, to have a chance to host a state playoff game — that's what we're trying to build every year."
Thomasville entered the year following the graduation of a stellar senior class, numbering six, that included Carmenonique Dawson, Kierrica Spencer, Maya Taylor and Audreka Davis. Thomasville also lost its most experienced returning player, Khabriyah Brown, in the first game to an ACL injury. The result was an 0-12 start. However, the Lady Bulldogs thumped Fitzgerald 58-29 on Jan. 17, which helped propel Thomasville up the region standings. Included in Thomasville's remarkable turnaround was a six-game winning streak that was halted in the region championship game against Brooks County. Despite the defeat, the Lady Bulldogs are still playing at a high level.
