THOMASVILLE —
Thomas County Central had a winning start to its ’12 baseball season.
Kyle Riley pitched five strong innings, Adam Choice had an RBI and one great catch in the outfield and the Yellow Jackets shut down the Class AAAAA Lowndes Vikings 3-1 in Tuesday’s season opener.
“Kyle Riley pitched awesome,” Central (1-0) coach Chad Parkerson said. “That’s kind of the sneak-peek preview we’ve been getting in practice. It did not surprise me that he was going to come out here and pitch well.”
Lowndes’ David Wortham led off the game with a dribbler down the third-base line that resulted in an infield single. Riley buckled down, however, and allowed only two more hits the rest of his five shutout innings. Riley also added five strikeouts.
“He got ahead of hitters and got some big strikeouts when we needed them,” Parkerson added.
Eric Johnson pitched the sixth inning and Kristofer Lee followed in the seventh for the Yellow Jackets. The Vikings were able to get runners on base but stranded 10, including the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh innings.
“That’s just pitchers making pitches when we need it and our defense being there to make a play,” Parkerson noted.
