THOMASVILLE —
The '12 slate is set for Thomas County Central football.
It starts with a Saturday night tilt at Thomasville and ends with a Region 1-AAAAA showdown against Harris County.
The schedule will be especially challenging for the Yellow Jackets, whose non-region opponents include Thomasville, Colquitt County, Marist, Cairo and Tift County.
"It's not by design, it's just games that we could find," Central coach Bill Shaver said. "We were hoping to possibly get some of the teams from the region Cairo was in, to have some closer home games; the schools in Albany or Crisp or Worth or Americus, some of those we've always played before. None of them were willing to try to set up a date with us. It was hard searching trying to find five games."
Marist coach Alan Chadwick was in a similar circumstance, struggling to schedule non-region opponents. The two decided to schedule each other, renewing a rivalry that dates back to 1996. It'll mark the first time, though, the two will have played in a non-playoff game since the teams opened that season in the Georgia Dome in the Corky Kell Classic. All previous six meetings were played in the Georgia Dome, making Sept. 7 the first time Central will visit Marist.
"I know coach Chadwick appreciates what we do. We have a big appreciation of the kind of program that he runs up there," Shaver said. "It's a good game. Obviously, you don't like it being such a far trip, having to go to Atlanta. It will be kind of neat trip to go to Atlanta and play at Marist since our kids have never been to Marist. Our fans have never been to Marist."
