THOMASVILLE —
Special teams miscues were prevalent Friday night for Thomasville in its loss to Thomas County Central — especially in the punting game.
Thomasville is hopeful the miscues can be rectified in time for this week’s game with Pelham.
Against the Yellow Jackets in the second half, the Bulldogs had a bad snap that resulted in a Central possession at the Bulldogs’ 16-yard line. The Bulldogs also had a punt partially blocked which gave the Yellow Jackets possession inside Thomasville territory again.
“It was a kid from the outside (that blocked it),” Thomasville coach Richie Marsh said. “(Our blockers) stepped out to block (Ray) Drew and they let the kid from the outside come.
“It’s something we’ve got to work on to get fixed.”
Adding to the Bulldogs’ woes Friday night was the injury to senior punter Bradley Weatherspoon. Late in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs facing a fourth-and-7 from their own 42, Weatherspoon had trouble handling a snap. He recovered in time to run past several Central defenders to pick up a first down. Weatherspoon was knocked out of bounds, however, and had to be helped off the field
“He took an MRI (Monday). They don’t know what he tore, they just know he tore some of the ligaments (in his leg),” Marsh said. “They just don’t know what yet.” If Weatherspoon can’t go in Friday night’s game against Pelham, Marsh said Anthony Pistelli, who also handles the kicking duties, will double as punter.
UNDEFEATED: Thomasville has never lost to Pelham. The Bulldogs are 15-0 against the Hornets, with their last meeting coming in 2005. Thomasville has pitched 10 shutouts against Pelham.
