THOMASVILLE —
The Thomas County Central Lady Yellow Jackets reluctantly settled for second best in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament on Saturday. The Lady Yellow Jackets dropped a hard-fought 54-45 decision to the Hardaway Lady Hawks in the championship game.
Erica Harvey's shot as time ran out in the first half and Tytianna Herring's putback at the end of the third quarter gave the Lady Yellow Jackets energy and hope, but they couldn’t seal the deal.
The Lady Yellow Jackets took their first lead at 26-24 with a Harvey basket with four minutes left in the third quarter. The fourth period started with the Lady Yellow Jackets down 33-30.
The Lady Yellow Jackets trailed 43-39 with two minutees to go. In the last 90 seconds, however, the Lady Hawks took control.
Despite their disappointment, the Lady Yellow Jackets stood and applauded the Lady Hawks as the clock expired.
Tytianna Herring paced Central with 14 points and Harvey and Alexius O'Neal chipped in 13 and 11, respectively.
In Saturday’s third-place boys game, the Yellow Jackets defeated Hardaway 63-46. They trailed 12-8 at the start of the second quarter but reeled off 17 points to take a 25-18 lead at the break.
The Yellow Jackets went were stout at the free throw line, hitting 10 of 12 shots.
Matt Priest paced Central with 16 points. Austin Bryant, Allen Wade and Deandre Cooksey tallied 12, 10 and eight, respectively.
