Southern’s Wilcox enjoying sensational senior season

THOMASVILLE — J.J. Wilcox’s final season at Georgia Southern is turning out to be his best.

On Monday, the Eagles’ second-leading tackler was invited to participate in the Senior Bowl. That honor followed his first-team all-conference selection by the Southern Conference coaches.

“It’s great, to know all the hard work you put in, in the summertime and in the fall and in the season, just to get recognized by other coaches ... I take it as a blessing and I take it as a privilege just to be one of the guys selected from Georgia Southern,” said Wilcox, a senior and former Cairo High standout. “Growing up, I’ve been around great players back in Cairo — Angelo (Pease), Jam (Reginald Bryant), Logan Bennett and all those guys — they taught me a lot, sitting behind those guys and learning. The leadership they showed me, I kind of transferred to up here. It’s paying off. I appreciate those guys and I appreciate the opportunity coach (Jeff) Monken has given me just to lead this team.”

Wilcox has led by example. Through 12 games, Wilcox has recorded 79 tackles three pass breakups and one interception. He’s also returned 27 kicks for 711 yards.
