CAIRO —
The Cairo Syrupmakers closed their regular season in style.
Trailing 1-0 to Westover in the sixth inning, Cairo rallied for four runs, highlighted by a two-run triple from Steven Bench, that led to the Syrupmakers’ 4-2 victory over the Patriots Friday night.
Cairo (18-7, 10-2) finished as the No. 2 seed in Region 1-AAA and will host Howard next weekend in the first round of the state tournament.
Chris Layton notched the win for Cairo on Friday. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and nine strikeouts.
Layton also had an RBI single in the sixth inning.
