The Thomasville girls began the new year with a win Friday night.
It was anything but a happy victory, though, for the Lady Bulldogs.
A lackadaisical second half nearly cost Thomasville a win against rival Thomas County Central.
The Lady Bulldogs (9-1) managed just 14 second-half points, struggled with turnovers but managed to eke out a 45-36 victory.
“We can’t beat the good teams with that,” said Thomasville coach Thomas McAboy, whose team opens Region 1-AA play tonight against Early County.
Thomasville held a 31-17 halftime lead, due in large part to six 3s. After intermission, the Lady Bulldogs committed one turnover after another, many of which came off the dribble.
“We shot the 3-point shot very well in the first half,” McAboy said. “We just couldn’t get any offense going (in the second half).”
Like the girls, the Thomasville boys (6-5) opened the new year with a win, slipping past Central 41-39 in overtime.
Henri Abrams led Thomasville with nine points. Teammates Andrew Parker and Derek Dixon each tallied eight. Devin Jones paced Central (5-6) with eight points.
