THOMASVILLE – Brookwood’s postseason journey begins today. Its first stop? Georgia Southwestern in Americus.
The Lady Warriors open the GISA Region 3-AAA playoffs against top-seed Deerfield-Windsor. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
The two teams played twice before during the regular season. The Lady Knights won both in routs, 69-49 at Brookwood and 73-50 in Albany. Brookwood coach Chris Seay is optimistic about his team’s chances in the third meeting.
“I think this has got to be the time when we really show the state, that irregardless of the record, we’re still a pretty tough team,” added Seay, whose team concluded the regular season 11-8 and 3-5 in region play. “We’ve got a whole lot of confidence. I think they’re ready to take it to the next level now.”
Brookwood’s record is somewhat deceptive. Its three region wins were against Calvary Christian (2) and Southland Academy. Among Brookwood’s region losses were a 43-42 decision to Southland and a 61-59 defeat to Westfield.
Brookwood enters the playoffs coming off a 64-34 rout of Calvary Christian. The Lady Warriors played without star junior Lauren Johnson, who was sidelined with a gimpy ankle. It was an injury she sustained the game before at Deerfield-Windsor. It was a big reason the Lady Warriors dropped their fifth region game.
“That kind of slowed us up a little bit,” Seay said. “That kind of got us out of our offense. (Deerfield-Windsor) took advantage of that.”
Seay expects Johnson to be ready tonight, which would be great news for the Lady Warriors. The guard is the team’s leading scorer at 31 points per game.
According to Seay, however, the key to tonight’s game will not be on the offensive end of the floor.
“We’ve got to play good defense. That’s been our focus all year. We’ve been really playing good defense,” Seay added.
In eight region games this year, the Lady Warriors allowed an average of 55 points per game.
