THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central’s defense shined during the 2009 season.
It shined on National Signing Day, too.
Along with safety Reshard Cliett signing a letter-of-intent with the University of South Florida, defensive end Caleb Heard signed with Shorter College and linebacker Chris Shiver signed with Carson-Newman.
“They’re all good football players,” said Cliff Heard, Central defensive coordinator and Caleb’s father. “Good football players play good defense. That’s what we had.”
Caleb Heard was a tenacious pass rusher during his years with the Yellow Jackets. He forced five fumbles last season. His father is hoping Caleb’s play will only improve at the collegiate level.
“It’s nice. I’m happy for him,” the coach said. “I’m hoping he can go up there and continue to grow and get better. He’s going to get to play for a really great football coach and a great man in Phil Jones.
“I couldn’t think of a better place for him to go.”
Caleb Heard will join former teammate Steven Powell, who started at Shorter on the offensive line last year as a freshman.
“It’s really exciting,” Caleb Heard said. “It’s been a dream my whole life to play college football.
“I talk to Steven a lot about it. From what I understand, they have a good, little winning program going on right now.”
Shorter College isn’t the only college Central is being reconnected to. Shiver is following a long list of former Jackets, including Leonard Guyton, Brandon Walden and Eric Rice, who have played at Carson-Newman. It’s a legacy Shiver is hoping to live up to.”
“I just can’t wait to put the helmet on again,” Shiver said.
Shiver tallied 101 tackles last season and scored two touchdowns. The versatile Shiver could play linebacker or safety for Carson -ewman.
“Chris is the kind of guy we send up there all the time,” Central head coach Bill Shaver said, “that hard-working guy that doesn’t mind doing what you’re asked to do to be successful.”
