BAINBRIDGE —
Footballs were flying all over the practice fields adjacent to Bainbridge High School Thursday afternoon.
Thomasville, Thomas County Central, Cairo, along with two schools from Alabama and Leon (Fla.) participated in a passing camp at Bainbridge. The three-hour long passing league drew rave reviews from those in attendance.
“I don’t know how we did but we had a good time,” Thomasville coach Richie Marsh said. “I ain’t never had a good time in a passing league except for today.
“I thought the teams here had a lot of character. I had a good time playing them.”
Bainbridge coach Ed Pilcher added, “Anytime you get to go against different talent, different folks instead of throwing against yourself and the same folks over and over again, it’s always good. Kids are going to be competitive. When you see somebody new, it just brings a little bit more out of them.”
While the coaches were pleased with the competitiveness and format the camp offered, they had mixed reviews on how well their teams did.
“I thought Eric (Dodson) finished off really strong,” Central coach Bill Shaver said. “The last four sequences, we were 8-for-8 on about three of them and 6-for-8 on the other one. You kind of like seeing that when you finish up, for him to be hot. All your offensive teams are going to feed off how well your quarterback plays. He got really pepped and started doing really well.”
Pilcher added, “At times we did alright. Early, we didn’t catch the ball very well and didn’t throw the ball very well. It was either one of two things. We were either trying to aim it or just weren’t catching it.”
Thursday’s passing camp was the final tuneup for area teams before fall practice begins on Sunday.
Central will hold its annual Midnight Madness Sunday morning.
“We’ve had plenty of chances to do our throwing and we have all our passing game in,” Shaver said. “We’re excited that on Saturday night, Sunday morning, we’re going to get the chance to put the pads on play football we like to play, where we come off and knock you in the mouth.
“Our defense loves hitting people, too. They’re excited about having the chance to do that. We had some collisions out here today that we haven’t had all summer long. I think all the teams are kind of ready for the passing leagues stuff to be over and get in there and hit somebody.”
Cairo will begin practicing in full pads on Monday. It’ll hold evening practices leading up to the start of school on Aug. 6. Cairo coach Tom Fallaw is enthused by the way his team has responded during the summer workouts.
“We’ve had a good summer. I think we had one of the better offseasons we’ve had,” Fallaw said.
“It kind of reminds me of those years we made those long runs. We had a lot of leadership.
“We had a good summer and a great offseason. We’ll see where that carries us. Our goal is to be better by the last game and be ready by the playoffs. That’s what I’ll always tell you and it ain’t going to change.”
