THOMASVILLE —
Another summer day gone by, another passing session under Thomas County Central’s belt.
The Yellow Jackets hosted a 7-on-7 passing league with Lowndes Wednesday afternoon.
The two teams threw for almost two hours at Central practice field. With Central set to compete in its last passing league today in Bainbridge, head coach Bill Shaver likes the progression his team has made on offense and defense.
“Now, we’ve gotten to the point where we’ve done the same stuff over and over and over again. For us, in the passing game we’ve got a limited number of passes but we’ve tried to perfect them all summer long,” Shaver said. “It’s really good for the young guys. The young guys are starting to recognize the plays they’re supposed to have.”
Returning senior starter Eric Dodson has directed the offense all summer long, while freshman quarterback Adam Choice has been working with the second team. Wednesday’s competition against Lowndes provided Dodson another opportunity to develop a rhythm with such receivers as Julius Reese, Eric Hollis and Nick Johnson. It wasn’t easy, however, against some of the best athletes in the state.
“Just like the very last pass right there, they covered us, which is going to happen. I said, ‘Hey, Eric they’ve got us covered, they won that battle and throw that thing away. Don’t get a pick. Don’t have a bad play.’ You’re going to get into situations when you play good teams, you’re not going to win every one of them, even in 7-on-7,” Shaver said. “But I like the way we got out there and competed today. I thought we caught the ball better than we did (Tuesday). We had a little off day (Tuesday). But I thought our offense came back well.
“I got a chance to watch the defense for that last series and I like the way I saw the guys breaking on the ball over there. I thought they did a really good job.”
The two teams will square off again on Aug. 13 in a preseason scrimmage at Thomas County Stadium.
“They pretty well know them on a first-name basis. We go to quarterback, receiver and offensive line camp with them, too, so they see these guys all the time,” Shaver said. “They enjoy competing against them. Knowing they’re one of the best programs in (Class) AAAAA, you want to compete against the best to try to get better.”
Along with Thomasville and Cairo, Central will travel to Bainbridge today to participate in a passing league against schools from Alabama.
