THOMASVILLE — Thomasville is one win away from the Class AA Final Four in tennis — boys and girls.

Both teams advanced to the quarterfinal round with a sweep of Screven County on Tuesday.

The boys cruised 5-0, while the girls pulled off a 3-2 victory.

The No. 1 doubles team of Emma Fennelly and Elizabeth Hardy clinched the win for the Lady Bulldogs. With each team having two victories, the No. 1 doubles match proved to be the decisive match. Fennelly and Hardy defeated Screven County’s duo of Jancy Durrence and Haley Mock 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

“I was real excited because they knew it was down to them,” Thomasville coach Phil Slaughter said. “They both got, especially in the third set, a look of determination in them that said, we’re just not going to lose today.”

In the third set, Thomasville held a 5-2 lead before Screven rallied to make it 5-4. But Fennelly and Hardy wouldn’t be denied.
