Offensive troubles death knell for ’Makers

CAIRO — The Cairo Syrupmakers’ Class AAAA championship dream died at West Thomas Stadium Friday night. The cause of death was multiple self-inflicted wounds.

Penalties, dropped passes, two lost fumbles, an interception and a bevy of high shotgun snaps killed the Syrupmakers (9-3), who were plagued by miscues from the outset in their 3-0 overtime loss to Mary Persons (10-2). Cairo couldn’t muster a point even though they got off 24 snaps in Bulldogs territory in the first half.

The Syrupmakers’ offensive opportunities dwindled considerably in the second half. They didn’t take a single snap on Mary Persons’ side of the field despite starting two fourth-quarter drives at their 49.

In overtime, Cairo, which got the ball first, couldn’t capitalize on a break. The Bulldogs ran into kicker Taylor Donalson after he misfired on a 28-yard field goal try. The penalty gave Donalson another shot from five yards closer, but the mulligan, although struck solidly, sailed slightly wide of the mark.

During its overtime possession, Mary Persons managed to gain one first down before Kenny Millier delivered the only points of the game on a 19-yard field goal.
