Kirkland, Thomas, Davis to play in college

THOMASVILLE — National Signing Day was in full swing at Cairo High School Wednesday. Steven Kirkland, Donald Thomas and P.J. Davis are leaving the Syrupmakers behind and headed to play college sports.

Kirkland will be playing baseball at Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

Thomas, the 5’6” 150 pound former Syrupmaker quarterback, will continue his football career at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla., and Davis is headed just a few hours north to Georgia Tech.

Davis scored 19 touchdowns on offense, two on defense, 106 tackles and helped lead the Syrupmakers to the Region 1-AAAA championship.

“I feel so blessed that I am in the position that I am in,” Davis said. “This is a dream come true. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of. I’m so thankful to my parents who have supported me along the way.”

Davis’s mom, Yolanda, remembers watching the movie, Seabiscuit, with her son.

“When we left the movie, P.J. said “Mom, that’s me,” Yolanda said.

The movie based on the best-selling non-fiction book: Seabiscuit:An American Legend is based on the life and racing career of an undersized and overlooked horse.

Through the recruiting process, Yolanda recalls a few coaches telling her that her son is a “great player, but is too short” or “too small” to play at their school.

As Yolanda watches her son sign his National Letter of Intent, she believes dreams come true. “It doesn’t matter how short you are, if it is in your heart and you pray about it, anything can happen,” Yolanda said.

Looks like Seabiscuit did it again.
