English off to strong start in tourney with 67

CALIFORNIA — Harris English got himself exactly in the position that he hopes for on the PGA Tour.

Last week, the Tour sophomore played his first two rounds at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in 6-under and sat only five shots away from second round leader Tiger Woods.

It was a good start for the 23 year-old from Thomasville now living in Sea Island. However, Woods finished with impressive four-shot victory which finished on Monday along the California coast in San Diego.

English ended in a tie for 73rd.

His new philosophy for each event he plays in is to take Mondays off to rest.

As a second-year player, he is obliged to keep his new commitment to the Wednesday pro-am tournaments.

“Since I was not in pro-ams on Wednesday last year, I’m changing my routine,” English said.

That principle could be of immense importance as he is currently on a stretch on five straight tournaments to begin the year.

He started in Maui at the Sony Open, then President Clinton’s Humana Challenge, last week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey, and currently he is in competition at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

An opening 4-under par 67 on Thursday left him a surprising seven shots off the lead of Phil Mickelson, who torched the desert course at TPC Scottsdale with an 11-under par 60.
