CAIRO —
There was a Tornado sighting in Cairo on Friday.
It didn’t scare the Syrupmakers, however.
Cairo destroyed its Region 1-AAA rivals at Jackie Robinson Field. Alex Baxter had four RBIs, Steven Bench pitched four innings of shutout baseball as Cairo crushed Monroe 16-0 in four innings.
“They missed a couple of balls and we were stinging them pretty good,” Cairo coach Ron Best said. “I’m proud of the guys. It was senior night for us. Sometimes that provides a mental distraction for our players. The ones that didn’t hit well would probably say that was why.
“As a team, we swung the bat good, threw strikes, played good defense and it’s nice to have a win like this.”
The Syrupmakers had 12 hits, including a two-run homer by Connor Butler that ended the game in the fourth. Butler also laced an RBI double in the first inning.
Butler, Jonathan Moore, Alex Flowers, Chris Layton and Tyler Dalton each had two hits for the Syrupmakers.
