THOMASVILLE Ñ It came from the sky and evoked a reaction of wonderment and awe in many local residents akin to what one might expect should another kind of alien form ever fall from it.
Friday evening, just after 6 p.m., Thomasville and Thomas County saw snow fall onto the ground, drift onto their windowsills or splatter against their windshields as they drove home.
The snow did not stick to the ground or around the area for very long, but several people at a local convenience store at the corner of Smith Avenue and Pinetree Boulevard stopped what they were doing and simply stared up at the sky in wonder as the cold, wet flakes plopped onto their heads or perched on their noses.
"This is the first time I've ever seen snow," enthused Chelsea Turner as she stood in the parking lot and held her hand out to catch some of the flakes that fell steadily for approximately 20 minutes. "This is amazing! Snow in Georgia; I love it!"
Robert Smith said he didn't believe the person that told him it was snowing ... until he went outside.
"I said, 'you crazy,' but then I looked and it was," he said. "I remember when it snowed here the last time, about 20 years ago. I haven't seen it here since until now."
Anita Knaff-Martin used to live in Cincinnati, Ohio, but moved to Thomasville a few years ago.
She's seen plenty of snow but never here.
"I can't believe this," she said in wonder. "It is just beautiful and a gift from God.Ó
The sun was shining but roadways were still wet and the temperature still chilly in Thomasville Saturday.
The Georgia Department of Transportation was busy checking all bridges, overpasses and roadways in the southwestern part of the state throughout Friday and Saturday morning.
The last update around 10 a.m. Saturday from Tifton Communications Officer Craig Solomon reported all roads were passable but he also said Òmotorists are strongly encouraged to stay off the roadways and slow down.Ó
