Camille West Titus

Funeral services for Camille West Titus are at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 216 Remington Ave., Thomasville. She was the daughter of Ralph Owen West and Ethel W. West. Mrs. Titus died Nov. 26 at the age of 87. Following the service friends and family will celebrate her life at the home of her daughter, Gilda Williams. Mrs. Titus attended Valdosta State College for Women and married Theo Titus III on March 23, 1941. Following World War II, they settled in Thomasville where she dedicated her life to raising their seven children and serving her family, faith, and community. Her belief that life was to be lived by faith, with an open heart, led her to give freely and often to whomever God brought her way. She demonstrated her deep concern for children and persons with special needs throughout her long career as volunteer coordinator at Southwestern State Hospital where her love and skill enhanced healing and quality of life for thousands of patients. Prior to that she served children in her role of kindergarten teacher at St Thomas Episcopal Day School and as a head-start teacher. With her husband she shared the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 2000 for their “outstanding service, their unselfish interest and their significant contribution so generously displayed toward the improvement and promotion of our community.” She was a foster grandparent, a 4-H advisor, a member of the St. Thomas Church Altar Guild at and a long time member of the Woman’s Club. She also served on the board of directors for The Open door Adoption Agency. During the 10 years her husband served in the Georgia Legislature, she worked actively at his side nurturing the best interests of Thomas County. Her husband often joked “She is the politician and I am the statesman.” She was chosen to coordinate activities for legislative spouses — known colloquially as “The legisladies.” In a touching expression of bi-partisan affection, the couple received a standing ovation from both parties of The Georgia House of Representatives on the occasion of his retirement. She was pre-deceased by her husband Theo Titus III; son, Michael Thomas Titus (Marie); sister, Doris W. Moreland and brother, Ralph O. West Jr. She is survived by her children Theo Titus IV, Camille Titus Albert (Don), Margaret Crovatt Titus “Twitty”, Owen Henry Titus, Gilda Holloway Williams, Eleanor Elizabeth Titus “Ellie”(Rob Hayes); grandchildren, Tamara Titus (Dr. Lane Jacobs), Everett Titus (Kimberly), Russell Titus (Courtney), Ed Guilbeau (Jan), Danielle Hinkle (Scott), Mandy Moore (Bart), Carrie Albert (Julie Betts), Arden Singletary, Jessica Spurlock (Jason), Mary-Martinangel Kitchens, Joseph Kitchens, Rebecca Titus, Lyle Williams, Ashlyn Williams, Neel Williams, Luke Rehberg, Michael Jonklaas; and great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and Jacob Titus, Aria and Eddie Guilbeau, Hailey and Elena Hinkle, Zack, and Cameron Moore, Jonathan McMurdo, Evan and Nicholas Albert, Arianna Spurlock, Bella Kitchens and Kyah Rehberg. Memorial contributions for the benefit of children and youth may be given in her memory to Vashti School, Inc. 1815 East Clay St., Thomasville, Ga. 31792.
