Delia L. Burke

Delia L. Burke, born in Thomasville on May 14, 1933, died peacefully at Hospice Savannah in the early morning hours of Feb. 4. Burke is the daughter of Elder and D. O. Lewis. She is survived by her four children, Debrah H. Wilson (Stan), Ben Hunley (Pam), Tim, and Stuart Hunley; two grandchildren, Noelle Wilson McCowan (Peter), and Sam Hunley. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Ben Hunley, and her second husband, William Vincent Burke, and 9 siblings. She was a communicant of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and sang in the choir. She served on the board of the St. Thomas Thrift Store as well as many other volunteer projects including Episcopal Youth and Childrens' Services (EYCS) where she served for more than 10 years. She was an avid reader and in her later years took up painting as a hobby. She had an immense love of friends and family. Burke was loved by all she met because of her fun-loving and happy spirit which she demonstrated so beautifully even during her time in Hospice. As she went to sleep each night, she prayed for friends and family from coast-to-coast. Her friends and family will be eternally grateful for the kind and loving care she received during her stay at Hospice of Savannah. Many thanks to all who cared for her so well during her final days. She was a warm, vivacious, outgoing person who had many close friends. Two of her closest friends who helped care for her are Mary Lee and Will Quaile, who her children are indebted to forever. A celebration of life in memory of Dee was held at the home of friend Will Quaile on Friday, Feb. 8, at 15 Island Drive. Her ashes were scattered into the river. Anyone who wishes to remember Dee with a memorial may do so by making a donation to Hospice of Savannah (Eisenhower Drive), St. Thomas Episcopal Church or a charity of their choice. — Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel
