Carl Matthew Rayburn

THOMASVILLE —

Services for Carl Matthew Rayburn, 84, of Boston, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Salem Baptist Church, Pavo, where he was a member. The Revs. Marshall Dixon, Wayne Goff and John Grebata will officiate. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Born May 28, 1927, in Cook County, Carl was a son of the late Clarence A. Rayburn Sr. and Beulah Patten Rayburn. In 1946, Mr. Rayburn enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving various tours overseas until 1949, while earning the rank of corporal. Mr. Rayburn was a lifetime Thomas County farmer and recipient of the 1992 Kiwanis Club Farmer of the Year Award. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Helen Taylor Rayburn. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Shirley Rayburn, Dennis Rayburn, and Jeffrey and Lawana Rayburn all of Boston; five grandchildren, Brian Rayburn and wife Sherri, Kathryn Singletary and husband Jared, Thomas Rayburn and Andrew Rayburn, all of Boston; Marilyn Shiver and husband Greg of Camilla; and three great-grandchildren, Stone and Dawson Singletary and Gavin Shiver. Also surviving are his brother, William Rayburn of Brunswick, and a sister Betty Peters of Boston. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Doris, brothers Clarence A. Jr. and Wallace Rayburn, sisters-in-law Dorothy Rayburn and Elizabeth Rayburn, and brother-in-law, Albert Peters. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 10795 Highway 122 Thomasville, Ga. 31757. .
