THOMASVILLE —
When the kindergarten classes at Brookwood School began their study of the number 100, they were joined by the junior kindergarten and first grade students to celebrate the 100th day of school. On Jan. 30, all the youngsters formed the big number in the circle at the front of Brookwood while holding, then releasing blue and white balloons, reflecting the school colors.
Kindergartener Anna Lauri Parrott’s grandfather, Wayne Windham, the vice president of Grady EMC, supplied a bucket truck to provide an aerial photo platform for Upper School journalism students Ann Varnedoe and Hannah Notaro to take pictures.
“In unison, all of the students counted to 100 then released the balloons,” explained Lauri Parrott, a first-grade teacher.
Besides participating in the group formation, the kindergarten students ate breakfast consisting of one cheese stick next to two bagel halves, which formed the number 100. They each wrote all the numbers between one and 100, read 100 words, made a 100-bead necklace, made a placemat decorated with 100 dots, took part in 100 different exercises, counted by ones, fives and 10s to 100, and either read or listened to books about the 100th day.
“They played 100-day Bingo, ate a huge 100-day cookie cake for their snack and also compared and measured bags of 100 objects that the children all brought from home,” said kindergarten teacher Jenni Martin. “These included everything from 100 pieces of confetti to 100 Lego pieces.”
But, most of all, Martin explained, “They became 100 days smarter.”
