THOMASVILLE — Some 62 Thomas County properties will go on the auction block Tuesday morning.

The properties have outstanding delinquent taxes owed for 2008.

“That is by far five times the amount we’ve ever sold,” said Lt. Steven Jones, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

The sheriff’s office has collected delinquent taxes since Tax Commissioner Shirley Prevatt relinquished her ex-officio sheriff status two years ago, resulting in the sheriff’s office collecting delinquent taxes.

The sale is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas County Judicial Center.

“Most of the people also owe 2009 taxes,” Jones explained.

Property owners have until 10 a.m. Tuesday to pay their taxes.

The person who owes the taxes and loses the land at the sale may purchase it from the buyer within 12 months of the auction. The new owner cannot charge more than an additional 20 percent above the auction price when selling to the former owner.

The new owner cannot make improvements to or change the property within 12 months of the purchase and cannot sell it to anyone but the former owner during the first year after the delinquent tax sale.
