THOMASVILLE —
Thomasville City Scholars Academy Science Olympiad middle school team earned a trip to the state tournament to be held at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta on March 24 when 27 students competed on two teams and brought home a second-place trophy from the region tournament held at South Georgia College in Douglas on Saturday. \Although the school sent two teams to the competition, trophies and invitations to state were limited to one per school.
Twenty-three events cover physical science, earth science, life science, engineering, technology, chemistry and scientific inquiry. The competition involves a wide range of activities from taking tests about severe storms, to using chemistry skills to solve a simulated crime, to building a catapult that can launch different sized projectiles specific distances.
Scholars Academy science teacher and team coach Christie Ariail said Science Olympiad encourages students to learn where their academic strengths lie, and they get to develop those specifically to compete with their peers.
“Their competitive side really comes out!” said Ariail. “They also learn to work together with teammates to make the team successful.”
