Members of fifth-grade classes at Brookwood Lower School sang patriotic songs and recited facts about the U.S. military and Veterans Day at the Friday Thomas County Veterans Day Ceremony.
Some of the information referred to a faculty member at their school.
A Brookwood Lower School fifth-grade teacher, Terry Howell, was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the Stephen W. Groves. Howell served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
The Stephen W. Groves was sailing with the USS Stark when the Stark was struck by Iraqi missiles in 1987. Some 37 sailors aboard the vessel died.
Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day, is observed at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month — the time fighting ended in World War I.
