THOMASVILLE —
Republican Mitt Romney’s selection of U.S. Rep Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate is stirring conversation locally and nationally. Romney announced Ryan, 42, as his pick for the vice presidency in Norfolk, Va. on Saturday.
John Ogburn, Thomas County Republican Party publicist and planning committee member, is very excited about Romney’s choice.
“We were all anxious about who Romney’s running mate would be. I don’t know anyone who isn’t excited about Ryan,” he said. “This was a choice where Romney put the country first and politics second.”
Lillian Petrie, a volunteer at the Regional Republican Party headquarters on Jackson Street, thinks there is much that needs to change in America. She believes Romney and Ryan can make those changes happen.
“We are importing too much, we need to make corporate taxes smaller and the government is overwhelming businesses with paperwork,” Petrie said. “I am very pleased with Romney’s selection. Ryan has plans to get our country back in line.”
Thomas County Republican Oarty chair Heather Abbott fully supports Romney’s choice.
“I think it shows that Romney is serious about tackling some of the major problems in our country, one of which is entitlement reform,” Abbott said. “I think he has chosen someone who is very cerebral and someone who understands the challenges that our country is facing.”
