THOMASVILLE —
New Hope Road has been surveyed by the state and by Thomas County with paving in mind. The work never panned out.
The state considered paving the road in the early 1960s. The county did likewise in the late ’80s.
After a lot of rain, a portion of the road becomes a playground for those who like to drive vehicles through muddy, boggy places.
Recently, a vehicle attempting to travel on the damaged road slid into a ditch.
On behalf of his office, Thomas County Sheriff Carlton Powell asked county commissioners this week if that section of the road, a “shortcut,” could be closed until it dries out. If not, unsuspecting motorists will have to be towed from the problem area, Powell told the board.
