THOMASVILLE —
Hopefully, some serious learning will occur at the Thomas County Board of Education office on Tuesday.
The 15th citizens meeting sponsored by the Times-Enterprise, set to start at 6:30 p.m., will feature presentations by the Brighter Georgia Education Coalition (BGEC) and the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA). Their spokesmen will provide information about Amendment 1 — the charter school provision — on the Nov. 6 ballot.
The amendment would allow a state committee established by the legislature and governor to approve applications for charter schools that have been rejected by local school boards.
Tuesday’s meeting will also include several candidates for local and state offices. They will share why they believe they are the best person for the office they are seeking. The offices include state representative, sheriff, tax commissioner and chief magistrate.
The event will open with the charter school discussion. Charter schools are tuition-free, locally grown public schools that are held accountable for improved student achievement in exchange for the freedom to be flexible and innovative. There are currently 110 local and state charter schools in the state.
A recent Atlanta-Journal Constitution poll shows that Georgians are closely divided on the issue. The newspaper’s website, ajc.com, reported on Oct. 13 that 45 percent of the 908 likely voters polled would support the amendment while 42 percent were opposed. Thirteen percent said they did not know about the amendment or did not answer the question.
The BGEC and GSSA hope to clear up any local confusion.
