TOSAC to present 'Pokey'

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville on Stage and Co.’s fall production “The Journal of Pokey Perkins” opens at 8 p.m.  Friday in the Storefront Theater on Broad Street.

“The Journal of Pokey Perkins” is an original play written by south Georgia author Basil Lucas, who lives in Bainbridge. Lucas is a 1959 graduate of Emory at Oxford. He and his fellow classmates have formed at literary group who continue to support each other in their offerings of the written word. His group of Oxford fans will be travelling from near and far to see the first production of “Pokey” on the TOSAC stage.

Pokey is an elderly self-educated black man who has escaped his former life in an attempt to recover from the loss of his beloved wife Geneva. He has a love for reading as well as a desire to document life in a changing society as he sees it. When his overloaded car breaks down in the middle of nowhere Pokey settle in to a rented tenant cabin on the property of the widowed Lois Sweetapple.  After his unexpected death Lois discovers his journals and opens a wealth of historic folklore that will surprise, touch and delight the audience.

“I fell in love with the script and Pokey the first time I read it,” said Kathy Kefalas, director of the production. She thrilled to be presenting this first time production on the TOSAC stage.
