THOMASVILLE —
On Sept. 20 in Augusta, Thomasville native Brett Reichert, associate director of the International Student Services Office (ISSO) at Clayton State University, completed in a 70.3-mile Ironman triathlon.
Reichert joined 3,355 other racers. The competition consisted of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run. He finished this incredible feat in six hours and 11 minutes burning 5,000-6,000 calories.
Reichert, a 1986 Thomasville High School graduate, trained for five months prior to the competition.
“Training consisted of five to six days per week, which were organized by group training sessions,” he said. “We met as a team every Monday night for structured swim practice at a swim club in Atlanta and every Saturday for long-distance bike and run sessions. These took place in the countryside around Atlanta at well-known, low-traffic areas where lots of cyclists ride.
“For the other training, participants followed a schedule and got it done on their own before or after work. One of the hardest parts was getting up every Saturday around 6 a.m. to drive out to the country and bike for three hours, then run, only to get home, nap and find it's 3 p.m. — for 20 weeks.”
