Annual dance special occasion for special ed students

THOMASVILLE — Top 40 songs kept 375 students with disabilities dancing, laughing and smiling duringr the fifth annual Special Education Dance at Thomas County Central on Friday. The school hosted students from seven other counties.

The 2013 dance had a hippie, retro theme. Flashing lights and tie-died shirts filled the gymnasium.

“This is their own special day,” said Alma Simmons, a Central parapro said. “This is their own day to shine.”

Students were welcomed to the school through a multi-colored balloon archway.

Simmons says the best part of the dance is the kids.

“The smiles on their faces are also amazing,” Simmons said.

For many special education students, the dance is their prom.

“A lot of these kids don’t get to go to prom or homecoming because most of the time they don’t have transportation,” Simmons said. “So, we do this in the morning time. That way, they have buses and transportation.”
