Garden Center landscape plan progressing

THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville Garden Center is springing into action. The revitalization of the landscape plan is going according to schedule, according to Suzanne Finger, the landscape architect who is the volunteer project coordinator for the Thomasville Garden Club and member of Killarney Queen Garden Club.

“We have had wonderful cooperation from our contractors,” Finger said.

Finger explained that the lull in rental events and the initial success of the fundraising campaign made the beginning of the project an easy decision for club members.

“We will have the beds for planting outlined later this week and will be putting straw down,” Finger said. “We are getting ready to purchase plants which will make it look so much better. We appreciate everyone’s patience during our improvement phase, which was a messy project during December.”

Finger noted the concern about the removal of many trees.

“This past summer was a severe season for Southern Pine Beetle and all, but one or two trees that were taken out were too damaged to save,” Finger said. “We lost mostly loblolly and short leaf pines. Pine beetles love these trees. We also had 14 longleaf pines and now we have 11 with more planned in our planting bed along Blackshear Street. Many of the trees that we removed had become a hazard, and we will plant more than twice as many trees as we removed.”
