SWGTC sponsors design contest

THOMASVILLE —

Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) is seeking entries from local students in the Annual Manufacturing Appreciation Week Design Contest for elementary through high school students. The contest includes three categories:

Elementary School Students — Placemat Designs

Middle School Students — Poster Designs

High School Students — T-shirt Designs

The three categories will be judged separately by a panel of local judges who will consider creativity, skill/quality of the artwork, and the students’ grasp of manufacturing. Then local category winners will be entered into the statewide competition.

A monetary scholarship of $500 will be presented to the first place state winner of each category by the governor.

Contest creators hope that the competition will inspire area students to research information on manufacturing and learn that a career in manufacturing can be so much more than assembly line work.

Manufacturing Appreciation Week (MAW) was developed by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

This week was created to promote awareness of manufacturing and its importance to the state of Georgia. Manufacturing is vital to Georgia’s economy, accounting for almost 10 percent of the employment in the state.

Nearly 9,000 manufacturing facilities are located in Georgia, providing jobs for approximately 408,427 Georgians.

Some of Georgia's manufacturing operations include a variety of industries, such as transportation equipment, aerospace, computers and electronics, food, paper, metal fabrication, textiles, and plastics.

For 2013, MAW will be celebrated April 1 - 5 with an awards luncheon hosted on April 3, at the Georgia International Convention Center. At this ceremony the winners of the Design Contest and Manufacturer of the Year will be celebrated and recognized.
