THOMASVILLE —
On Monday, the City of Thomasville will begin the next phase of its Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) smart grid project.
This phase will call for the replacement of about 10,000 electric meters with new AMR meters and is expected to be completed by early 2013.
This is a capital project included in the 2012 budget.
Matchpoint Inc., the company that replaced the city’s aging water meters with AMR meters in 2010, will replace about 6,500 residential electric meters during a 10-week period.
City staff will complete the project by replacing all remaining residential and commercial meters. The meters will join the approximately 7,500 electric AMR meters that have already been installed.
Automatic Meter Reading is the technology of automatically collecting consumption, diagnostic and status data from electric meters, which can then be transferred to the central hub for billing, diagnostic and analysis purposes, by way of short-distance wireless frequencies.
“This project really brings our metering ability up to speed,” said Technology Resources Director Chris White. “Some of our electric meters have been in operation since the 1960s, so they are in need of replacement with more accurate AMR meters.”
