FAMILY BUSINESS

THOMASVILLE — One should not be surprised to see a couple of local school principals and their school system comptroller sister selling watermelons alongside city streets.

Lawana Stanaland Rayburn, Rhonda Stanaland Law and Clay Stanaland have been growing, harvesting and selling watermelons all their lives.

Rayburn is principal at Jerger Elementary School, while her sister is longtime comptroller for the Thomasville City School System. Clay Stanaland is principal at Cross Creek Elementary School.

The siblings and their parents, Thomasville residents Vivian and John Stanaland, have always had gardens — several of them — and the family tradition continues today.

“We have always sold watermelons from when I was little until now,” Clay Stanaland, 42, explained. The melons were grown this year at Stanaland’s house and sold at a busy Thomasville intersection.

The family loads the melons onto a truck and hauls them to the sale location.

“We sell a lot of them, and people want them every year,” Vivian Stanaland said.

The entire family tends to the many chores associated with large gardens. For the Stanaland offspring, the work is nothing new.

“My children have always done work,” their mother explained. “They did not get to sit around.”
